British universities are quite special and different from those in other countries. What most people do not know is that in order for an educational institution to issue certificates in the UK, it has to be recognised by the Privy Council, an advisory entity subordinated to the monarchy. British universities can be divided in four main categories, based on several criteria. To begin with, the most reputable ones are the ancient institutions, such as Oxford or Cambridge. These were built during the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, or at least before the 19th century. The second category is called Red Brick constructions, after the material they were built of, located in old industrial areas. The third class, new universities, can actually be divided in two groups: those built in the 60s and those that used to be polytechnics but gained the title of “university” after 1992. The last category is open universities, the only distance learning alternatives for students in UK.

From luxurious facilities, such as student accommodation Chelsea lodges, to unconventional specialisations and owning an airport, these are elements you may not find anywhere else in the world. This is undoubtedly one of the most famous educational establishment worldwide and this is due not only to its great history and quality programs, but also to the fact that Harry Potter series was filmed here. Most of the movies’ fans think Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is just a mystical place, but it actually exists and it is located inside Oxford University. The majestic dining hall you used to see in the beginning of each Harry Potter film is more than just a dream, but that is not all. There are also many other venues hosting the filming set, such as the Christ Church, the Bodleian Library’s Divinity School or the New College’s cloisters.
